Rising Damp Treatment in London

Tide marks along the bottom of your walls, peeling paint, crumbling plaster and a musty smell can all point to rising damp. We diagnose it properly and fix it for good – in Victorian and Edwardian terraces, period conversions and lower ground floor flats across London.

What Is Rising Damp?

Rising damp happens when groundwater is drawn up through brick and mortar by capillary action. Most houses built after 1875 have a damp-proof course (DPC), but in many London properties it has failed, was never installed, or has been bridged by raised ground levels, render, paths or internal plaster.

As the water evaporates it leaves behind salts. These salts attract moisture from the air, which is why damp patches return even after redecorating.

Is It Really Rising Damp?

Rising damp is one of the most misdiagnosed problems in the building trade. Condensation, leaking pipes, defective gutters and high external ground levels often look exactly the same. That’s why every job starts with a damp survey by a CSTDB-qualified surveyor, using moisture readings and a careful inspection inside and out. If it isn’t rising damp, we’ll tell you – and won’t sell you a damp course you don’t need.

How We Treat Rising Damp

  1. Survey and diagnosis – find the cause and check for bridging, ground levels and leaks.
  2. Remove contaminated plaster – hack off salt-damaged plaster, usually to around 1 metre high.
  3. Install a new damp-proof course – inject a silicone-based DPC cream into the mortar bed at the correct height.
  4. Replaster with salt-resistant plaster – a renovating plaster system that stops residual salts coming through.
  5. Remove the cause of bridging – lower ground levels, cut back render or clear air bricks where needed.
  6. Guarantee – insurance-backed and transferable if you sell.

Rising Damp In London Homes

London’s housing stock is full of solid-wall terraces with old slate or bitumen damp courses that have reached the end of their life. Front gardens and pavements raised over the years often bridge the original DPC. We treat rising damp in Hackney, Islington, Camden, Lambeth, Wandsworth, Westminster, Harrow and across Greater London.

How Much Does Rising Damp Treatment Cost?

Cost depends on the length of wall treated and the amount of replastering. After the damp survey (£150 + VAT) you receive a fixed written quotation with no hidden extras.
